Who says? They already are looking into loot boxes. All it takes is someone to report. It won’t be me since I am not American. I just don’t want WoT to suddenly get fined.
But to believe this isn’t gambling is naive.
Actually, it’s naïve to think it is gambling.
There is a marked difference between gambling (the kind that warrants regulation and disclosure to protect customers) and purchases that provide potential for bonuses. The general consensus of gambling implies a cost which provides a chance to win a reward, and generally that’s about it. So, if I wager $10 in gambling, I might win $10, I might win $20, or I might win nothing at all. With regards to WarGaming’s boxes, one purchases a product with a defined value and receives said product, but may also be rewarded extra product over an above the original value of the purchased product. In this example, say I spend $10 on a box and I receive $10 worth of product, but might also receive another $10 of extra product, or might also receive nothing extra. The biggest difference overall is that with WarGaming’s boxes you have no chance of losing your money – you always receive at least as much product as you have paid for.

I think WG missed an opportunity here to offer tanks that are in the client but not yet released such as Strv 81 and T44 lightweight or unreleased variants such as vanilla Skorpion and Pz; 58 in small numbers.

That is relevant for taxes, but not for international trade regulations (well not specifically, though there could be some interesting lawyering depending on if WGNA is wholly owned subsidiary of the foreign entity etc). Some things could be harder or not worth the effort to pursue but nothing prevents a nation from banning a foreign product (though that wouldn’t be determined by FTC alone since thats not really what they do and is outside their scope). Software and digital products are not immune or exempt.
I work with US international trade/import and export law as my work. Mostly more to do with the defense industry (and more related to export than import) but there is some crossover with commercial goods so not just speaking out of my [edited]lol.
I simply stated Cypress is where I see the transactions happening on my records, and Austin is where the offices are in the US. I have no dog in that conversation and I never said you were speaking out your butt.
I know nothing of all of the above as far as FTC and all that. I just like the game.

I thought last years were awesome, I like getting stuff at a 75% discount.
LOL, I just watched the video. The OP is worried about the Hype 59? The fact that the Defender, Skorp, E25 and the Lefh are in there ISN’T a problem??

Sorry but they are looking into it.
After watching the video:
1) this is one guy’s opinion and it’s definitely slanted towards the gambling side. For instance if something agrees with him it’s great, if not it’s BS.
2) the lady on the committee seems more concerned with the impact on children. I’m more concerned that the parents of those children apparently give them access to unlimited funds. Try being a proper parent and knowing what your kids are doing instead.
3) He equates gambling addiction to smoking addiction. Well, I can walk into a casino and say $50 for fun, when it’s gone so am I and I quit smoking. I have no sympathy for the weak willed.
But that’s just one guy’s opinion, just like in the video.

Oh yeah man no worries! Was just using that to help clarify things in the context of the thread conversation!
And yeah man 3 feet on a good day lol Small business and I somehow got stuck with export regulations and any/all other regulatory compliance to boot! I actually had to check a couple years ago to ensure me spending money through Cyprus to the Russian company wasn’t going to cause me any grief with background investigations lul.

Sorry, they are loot boxes. Pray the Federal Trade Commission doesn’t hear of this because they are looking into it. People don’t buy them for what they give in their value in Gold, and what not. They buy them for the bigger prizes. That makes it gambling.
The only reason these loot boxes aren’t creating trouble is because they have good odds.
Utterly false legal interpretation you have working there.
Gambling does not guarantee a return. These boxes give you at least your money worth, and most of them FAR outshine what you pay into them.
Hence, GIFT, as you are getting MORE than what you pay in.

Merry Christmas I guess.
It’ll probably be just like any “rare” or new tank sale. You’ll most likely see a rash of them until the end of the year and then it’ll tapper off.
But, unlike most other new and/or “rare” tanks sales, you’ll only see, at most, 3 of these on the enemy team.

FTC isn’t looking into them because they’re gambling persay. FTC is looking into it to determine if there are consumer protections and regulations that need to be in place. You’re unlikely to see a ban on all forms of ‘loot boxes’ rather regulations that require disclosure of odds, disclosure of minimum value in boxes, etc. As loot boxes go, these from WG are extremely tame and it would be pretty surprising to see them impacted outside of compliance with things like publishing odds of winning XYZ reward.
This is my expectation of the eventual results of all the loot box hype in the US. Though whether it us the FTC handling it, or some other regulatory body, or new laws, I won’t guess.
Someone else mentioned the contests where you can win things from Coke bottle caps was what WoT’s loot boxes were like. Those contests do happen to be regulated in the way you mention.
I also expect other gaming companies to follow WG’s lead in making up part of the “value” of the boxes in things one normally wouldn’t buy at the offered prices, but allows them to technically avoid the gambling label. In WG’s case, that’s credits.
Edited for additional thoughts.

This is a great announcement.
Out of the 4 I only have the M4 so 3 new tanks and the leaf blower I’ve been wanting for almost 2 years.
Again I like this. I have 3/4 and the IS-3A While I want for the auto loader isn’t a buy until I get it tank.
- hand-scrawled messages and additional accessories
I am on the tier 9 Bat Chat. I can buy back the Grille 15, and I have the IS-7. Eventually I’ll get the T57
- A French cavalryman, the Bat-Châtillon25 t is decorated with a cuirass, helmet, and sword
- The Grille 15‘s cannon is covered with a protective mesh and a cage is added for the gunner
- A Soviet style makes the IS-7look like it’s prepared to take on enemy aircraft
- The T57 Heavy Tank has hand-scrawled messages and additional accessories
No complaints at all. Unless I have to buy a ton of boxes to get the leaf blower.

This is a great thing they have done, I am a little concerned about one thing though. There’s no way they are doing a Christmas Event without the Type 59 being somewhere in there, i’ll give good odds it’s one of, if not the last Advent Calendar Tank

I go in a store and buy a case of soda. I go up to the counter and see a promotion. With the purchase of a soda, I can enter my name for the chance to win various things like a mini bar fridge. No extra cost or fee.
I go to the premium shop to buy 250 gold. While there I see a promotion. I can buy a gift box at the same price of 250g and I will get 250g and possibly win one of a list a prizes. No extra cost or fee.

Yeah its almost like every country can define what is gambling and if they’ll allow it individually! This still has nothing to do with the FTC investigation lol (They’re strictly looking into whether or not companies selling loot boxes are engaging in deceptive business practices, in particularly as they may be aimed at children). The FTC isn’t trying to determine if this is gambling. In our country that actually falls primarily under state jurisdiction. Here this might help you: https://en.wikipedia…e_United_States
Right now if you’re in the United States, this is not gambling, regardless of your own personal definition of the law. The actual enforced definition is the only that really counts. You’re looking at years before we’d see any significant rulings and it would only become a Federal issue at all if it were blanket put into the ‘online gambling’ bucket which currently is strictly for wagering money gambling to win money (actual currency not digital goods). Its much harder to prove beyond doubt that something constitutes gambling when it isn’t for money so you can add that much more time onto any kind of legislation.
So unless you live in Belgium I’m not sure what you’re going on about. If its your opinion that these SHOULD constitute gambling, well then that’s fine everyone is entitled to their opinion. You just seem to think your opinion means massive and timely restrictions incoming in the US (which you’re not going to see).

It’s actually been awhile since I’ve been happy with what WG is doing in terms of how they go about monetizing their game, but I was pleasantly surprised today when I saw their new Holiday Ops missions.
I thought they’d try and sell us loot boxes using the type 59 again as leverage to make sales, which was a huge piss off to people everywhere last year. So I’m really happy to see that they’re not including tanks they shouldn’t be in the loot boxes (I guess skorp and defender really shouldn’t be included but that’s for different reasons).
They instead this year are taking a more creative approach. Bundling in the potential for the new is3a (I can only assume it will be semi-balanced) seems like a great idea. But the best thing they did this year was the addition of those skins. They look amazing, are long overdue, and provide something really cool to the player without giving a significant advantage in combat (so not furthering the current increase in the P2W atmosphere).
So GJ to WG, the loot boxes this year are just about as perfect (in terms of what you’re putting in them) as they could be.
Great you just praised them. Now they will do 10 more things wrong
